Your thoughtful decisions today can create hope for children like Aranza.
Aranza first became part of the United Way of Santa Barbara County family shortly after arriving in Santa Barbara from Mexico. She started the United Way Fun in the Sun summer learning and enrichment program speaking only
Spanish. She attended every day with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn.
The following school year, Aranza thrived at the United Way United Learning Center, where she discovered the foundations and phonics of the English language. Tutors trained in the Orton-Gillingham methods of literacy instruction, assessed Aranza's skills and knowledge, and created a customized plan just for Aranza.
Aranza returned to Fun in the Sun the following summer. She thrived in the environment and her languages skills developed exponentially. By summer's end, Aranza could read and write fluently in English, having first joined the program 14 months before with no English at all.
Aranza is excited about 4th grade and her future. She says she wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

"Thank you very much!!! Last summer was a difficult time for Aranza, with many changes.
Fun In the Sun was like a breath of fresh air, a time to feel better in her surroundings.
This summer, she entered Fun In the Sun with greater confidence, with more desire to learn
and make friends. As a mother, I feel very satisfied and grateful. Thank you!"
- Aranza's mom, Dulce
